VUZ Succeeded in CDP’s Global Disclosure System for Investors

Výzkumný Ústav Železniční, a.s. (VUZ) has been ranked “C” within the global disclosure system administered by CDP, a non-profit organization focusing on environmental issues. VUZ is the first organization in the railway and heavy industry sector that has been assessed in the CEE region and the achieved score is a big success for the company.

CDP works together with the largest global investors and corporations. The initiative’s objective is to motivate enterprises to disclose their impacts on the environment and natural resources, and to reduce those impacts subsequently. CDP works in the field of climate changes, water security and forests.

On 7th December 2021 environmental data provided by more than 13 thousand companies was published through the platform.[1] That is worth over 64 % of global market capitalisation. The number of participant companies increased by 37 % this year, showing the growing interest of companies in their environmental impacts.

Only tens of enterprises willing to disclose this kind of information have joined the initiative in the Central and Eastern Europe so far. It is therefore a big success that VUZ has been awarded score C. VUZ is the first representative of the railway and heavy industry sector that has been ranked within the CEE region. At the same time, it was the very first year of VUZ reporting; the company follows up with its activities in the low-emission transport and business initiatives.

CDP’s scoring systems ranks companies from F to A. Only 272 companies have been scored “A” globally, meaning they have the least impact on the climate and the most sophisticated system of environmental objectives. In case of VUZ, score “C” awarded to the company means the organization has introduced a carbon footprint reporting system and it is working to improve. It is not very common for companies to be ranked “C”, i.e. achieve a more advanced level than basic “D”, when they take part in the initiative for the first time.

„C” stands for “awareness” level. The score shows how environmental issues are reflected in the company’s business activities and includes assessment of the business activities’ environmental impacts and information about how those activities impact people and ecosystems.

VUZ aims to improve in all the areas of its business activities to accomplish its vision of environmentally friendly development. The company is also an active member of project TA ČR TO01000324 “Regional Hydrogen Trains on Czech Railways”.
